Of course, mother’s milk is always best.

The very first milk provided by the mother is the COLOSTRUM and it provides the baby with optimal amounts of essential nutrients to give the baby the best possible start to life.

Colostrum is the pre-milk or “first milk” that is produced by human and mammal mother’s and it is thick, sticky and yellowish in colour.

Approximately 10% of all infants born worldwide are born prematurely (defined as birth before 37 weeks gestation).

Some of the most concerning features of pre-term infants is their immature gastrointestinal tract and lack of maturation of the immune system together with very low birth weight.

The development of the GI tract starts early after conception and is finished just after 20 weeks of gestation. At birth the GI tract is prepared for oral feedings. After birth the mother’s colostrum is important for the continued maturation of the gut.

When a baby is born pre-term, the process of gut maturation is interrupted before it has not fully developed to handle external/oral nutrition. At the same time mother’s own milk is often limited or not available at all. Therefore, pre-term infant’s first nutrition is a major challenge in NICU’s worldwide.

BOVINE COLOSTRUM

BOVINE COLOSTRUM (from cows) supplementation may also be especially beneficial for pre-term infants in increasing protein intake, keeping the infant adequately hydrated and supplementing all the nutritional components and antibodies of colostrum to enable the pre-term infant to gain weight and increase immunity.

For pre-term babies the immunoglobulin’s provided by colostrum are vital to finish the maturation of the immune system and growth factors to help fully develop the gut of the pre-term infant.

Colostrum is high in carbohydrates, protein, antibodies and low in fat which makes it perfect to deliver high amount of nutrients in a very low-volume form which baby can tolerate.

Bovine Colostrum contains very high amounts of the same bio-compounds and may be the perfect solution for the shortcomings of the supplemental diets used for pre-term infants (i.e. Formula) when mother’s own milk is not available.

It has been proven via clinical studies that bovine colostrum as part of the initial diet improved gut maturation and reduced the risk of infection in preterm piglets. The project NEOMUNE/NEOCOL has undertaken several studies that show colostrum to have gut protective effects in premature piglets.

BOVINE COLOSTRUM has been tested as a diet supplement for pre-term infants in a safety & feasibility study on hospitals in Denmark and China. It has been established that BOVINE COLOSTRUM is not only feasible as a diet supplement for pre-term infants but there were no adverse clinical effect observed at all.

Not only is Bovine COLOSTRUM a fantastic substitute when mom’s breast milk is not available, but also because BOVINE COLOSTRUM is so similar to mom’s own Colostrum. COLOSTRUM will continue to prepare the infants gut for oral feedings and give the pre-term infant all the nutrients and immune boosting strength to continue to grow, gain weight and thrive possibly reducing further complications and infections which tend to affect NICU pre-term infants during their first few weeks of life.
